  • A species is considered threatened when it may become endangered in the near future. Small footed bats are considered threatened because there was a large population decline between the 1930's and '70's. One researcher who set out to get a population count found only 363 bats in 7 out of 100 caves observed.

  • Some of the caves and mines where the small footed bats hibernate are being closed off in order to keep humans from disturbing them as they sleep. This disturbance causes them to unnecessarily expend energy that they need to survive the winter. There are also regular surveys conducted to monitor the small footed bat's status. The Wildlife Resource Conservation Program is trying to help conserve the small footed bat.
  • Diet: Moths, flies, true bugs, and ants, along with other small insects.
  • Size: Small footed bats weigh less than 1/4 of an ounce. They are usually about 3 1/2 inches long, including their 1 1/2 inch tail.
  • Housing requirements: They like caves and abandoned mine shafts, usually near water
